By capturing the body language of ballet dancers off stage, his documentary photographs are reminiscent of scenes from a psychological pantomime, full of his own emotions and subconscious and at the same time stimulating the imagination of the audience.

ARTIST
Gao Shang graduated from the Communication University of China with a degree in photography. He studied film photography at Central Newsreel and Documentary Film Studio. As a photographer for the National Grand Theatre and Sony, he spent seven years documenting the backstage world of ballet. He has worked internationally with ballet ensembles such as the American Ballet Theatre, the Mariinsky Theatre Ballet, the Bolshoi Ballet and the Paris Opera Ballet.
